Guide to the 2012 Summer Sailing Season

Saint Paul, MN: Fans of big boat racing have four major events to keep track of this year – the Volvo Ocean Race, the Global Ocean Race, Newport to Bermuda, and the hotly-contested (legal and otherwise) series-racing portion of the America’s Cup with final match racing to be held September 2013 in San Francisco.

In addition to these spectacular and challenging contests, this summer is packed with a schedule of really terrific races:

  • Rolex Volcano Race (site) – Capri, Italy, May 19-25, 2012
The first of several exciting races taking place in the Med. Twenty two maxi-yachts are scheduled to compete in this 400 nm race from Gaeta, Italy through the Aeolian Islands to Capri.  We’ll be watching Caol Ila, a Marten 67, not only because it’s the sole US entrant but also because the boat is named for one of our favorite single-malt Scotches.
  • Giraglia Rolex Cup (site) – Saint-Tropez, France / San Remo, Italy, June 8-15, 2012
Boats competing in this 240 nm race leave the port of Saint-Tropez , head round the Giraglia before running to San Remo.
  • Newport-Bermuda Race (site) – Newport, Rhode Island, USA – Hamilton, Bermuda, June 15 – 22, 2012
This is our favorite race: a quintessentially-summer, offshore sailing adventure.  The number of opportunities for smaller boats and amateurs to successfully compete, too, contribute to making this one of the most interesting races.
  • Bayfield “Around the Islands” Race – Bayfield, Wisconsin, USA, June 30, 2012
Running a course that takes a big, clockwise loop around the Apostle Islands, this is one of the longer Bayfield-area races testing endurance as well as a crew’s ability to respond quickly to fluky winds.  If you make it to breakfast the next morning, you’ve done well.
  • Bayfield Race Week (site) – Bayfield, Wisconsin, USA, July 2-6, 2012
The Chicago-Mackinack race notwithstanding. this is truly the best, old-school races of the Great Lakes. Taking place over the course of the entire week, competing is a luxury as well as a challenge.
  • Rolex Ilhabela Sailing Week (site) – Ilhabela, São Paulo, Brazil, July 8-14, 2012
Set off the Brazilian island of Ilhabela, near São Paulo. Big, steady winds are the hallmark of this tropical race.
  • New York Yacht Club Race Week (site) at Newport Presented by Rolex – Newport, Rhode Island, USA, July 14-22, 2012
Over 200 boats will be competing on the course which covers Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound.
  • Race to Mackinac (site) – Chicago, IL to Mackinac Island, MI, July 21, 2012
The Chicago Yacht Club sponsors this annual race to Mackinac Island, a roughly 289 nm run straight north to the far, upper end of Lake Michigan.  This year’s race is the 104th running.
  • Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (site) – Porto Cervo, Italy, September 3-8, 2012
The ‘Maxi’, open to yachts 60ft or longer, is a combination of traditional windward/leeward courses and coastal races run in northwest Sardinia.
